Cultural History

The Bear River Band of Rohnerville Rancheria is a federally recognized tribe composed of Native Americans. The tribal members were the ancestral inhabitants of the Bear Rivers located in the vicinity of the Cape Mendocino. The Cape Mendocino is now popularly known to be in the present day Humboldt County in California. These tribal members are those who can speak that of the Athapaskan language. The tribe is now mainly settled in the California State. 
Meanwhile, aside from the tribal members, some other descendants of the Wiyot are also living in the rancheria. This does not bring about animosities as the people of the Bear River Band welcomes everybody who want to partake in the tribal lands except those who are in search for colonies. The Wiyot people have claimed in to have territories up to the Bear River thus having the Rohnerville town part of the tribal territory. 

The tribal members are known to be hunters, gatherers and fishers. They used to gather berries and other seeds. The tribal people are hunted the small games that they could find in their area. They also fished for mostly salmon which is considered to be their staple food during the earlier times. Aside from these, the basketry industry was also a booming industry. The tribe has started gathering other grasses to be used in basket weaving. Many tourists claim that the baskets made by the tribal members are one of the best that they have ever seen when it comes to quality and the intricate design. This only proves that the tribal members were blessed with the artistry. Up to this day, the basketry is still a major industry in the whole of the tribal rancheria. The tribal traditions are also brought upon the artistry of the members. There are evidences that showcase the involvement of the tribal customs in the designs of the basket carefully woven by the women. The women were not only the ones who were fond of basket weaving, but the men as well. 

The The Bear River Band of Rohnerville Rancheria of today still upholds their tribal traditions. Their mission statement says that their primary goal is to serve and to satisfy the tribal members through the improvements of the cost effectiveness and the quality of the Tribal Government. This will be applied through the building of a team of people who are willing to develop and maintain the highest quality of the government and the services dedicated for the members of the The Bear River Band of Rohnerville Rancheria. 

The majority of the tribal enterprises are comprised of the gaming and real estate. The tribal casino is known as the Bear River Casino. It is located on the tribal reservation in Loleta, California. It has 349 slot machines, 10 table games, 3 poker tables, a sports bar equipped where live bands perform at least twice a week, a first class restaurant and a valet parking. The Bear River Estates, on the other hand, is the official name of the tribal property which is located on the western portion of the Bear River Casino. It is 113 acres and is reserved for the future development of a soon to be gas station, a mini bar, tribal housing facility or RV park. Lastly, the Basayo Village is the housing development which is located in the Rohnerville Road in Fortuna California.
